Rumor check
Is her husband the politician David Owen? No. Lord Owen was born in 1938; Emma's husband is a businessman she met in the 1990s.

HP picked a new boss on November 4, 2026. Its board named Emma Walmsley, the former GSK chief, as CEO from January 4, 2027 [1]. So who is the Emma Walmsley husband she once called her best decision? His name is David Owen, and they have been married since 1995 [3].

They have four children, three sons and a daughter [4]. He is an entrepreneur who stepped back from his own business so she could take the GSK job in 2010 [4][5]. She rarely talks about home, so the record is thin, but it is clear.

We went through what she has said herself, a stock market filing that names him, and reports from trusted outlets. Below is what holds up, what does not, and the family story behind one of the most powerful women in business. We don’t name her children, because she never has.

Why Emma Walmsley is in the news

HP said its board voted unanimously for her. She replaces Bruce Broussard, who has run the company as interim CEO since February 2026. He will move up to board chair on the same day she starts [1].

Reuters framed the timing around a memory chip shortage that has pushed up PC prices and hit the whole industry [2]. So she walks into a hard year.

Big jobs are nothing new for her. She ran GSK from April 2017 to December 2025, and she has sat on Microsoft’s board for seven years. Before that she spent 17 years at L’Oréal [1].

When GSK first named her in 2016, she became the first woman to lead a major global drug company. One fund manager called it a “watershed moment” for the sector [12].

Who is Emma Walmsley husband David Owen?

David Owen is a Cambridge educated entrepreneur. The Daily Mail gave his age as 52 in 2016, when Emma was 47 [4]. A 2018 This is Money profile later called him a former businessman [5].

He keeps out of public view. He has no public profile of his own that we could confirm, and he does not give interviews. Most of what is known comes from her side of the story.

There is one hard record with his name on it. On February 18, 2019, while she was GSK’s CEO, she moved 102,035 GSK shares to “Mr David Owen.” The company filing lists him as her spouse and says the transfer was for nil consideration, with no change in beneficial ownership [7].

In plain words, the shares stayed in the family. It was a paperwork move between husband and wife, not a sale.

Not the former foreign secretary

Search his name and you will hit Lord David Owen, the British politician who was foreign secretary in the late 1970s. That is a different man. Lord Owen was born in 1938, which does not match the age reported for Emma’s husband [13] [4].

How they met, and the calls she ignored

They met at a party when she was in her mid twenties. Friends quoted by This is Money said she spent the next morning dodging his phone calls [5].

She gave in and agreed to a date, partly out of guilt, the same report says. They married about a year later [5].

The wedding was in September 1995 in Greenwich, London [3]. By then she was a young marketer at L’Oréal, where she would stay for 17 years [1].

In September 2025 she marked 30 years of marriage on LinkedIn. She wrote that a big part of being lucky in a career is “having a great support system at home.” Haleon CEO Brian McNamara replied, “Happy Anniversary Emma and David!” [8]

“The second best decision I have made, after marrying David.” [4]

The husband who stepped back

For her career, this part of their story matters most. In 2007 the family moved to Shanghai for her L’Oréal job. While they lived there, David set up a new business in China [4].

Then in 2010 GSK came calling. She went to what she thought was a networking lunch with then CEO Andrew Witty, and came out with an offer to run its European consumer business [5].

She nearly said no. “I spent a week persuading myself I would be insane to do it,” she said, asking herself why her career should come first again [4].

David pushed back. She said he “gently reminded” her that she had called every new role too big for her, and then managed fine. He stepped back from his China venture when the family came home, so she could take the job [4] [5].

Seven years later she was running the whole company. Many two career couples will know that kind of trade. The Daily Mail reported that she worried the move was unfair on him, since his work had already come second to hers more than once [4].

Emma Walmsley children, four kids who speak Mandarin

The couple have four children, three boys and a girl [4]. Their names and ages have never been made public, and we are keeping it that way.

The most personal account comes from Emma herself, in a short essay GSK published. She was seven months pregnant with their fourth child when L’Oréal asked her to take over its consumer business in China [6].

They talked it over at home. The plan was to have the baby, then move to Shanghai, where she would finish her maternity leave. She called it “quite scary” but “so worth it” [6].

The family did not hide in an expat bubble. According to This is Money, she chose to live outside the foreign community so the children could take in Chinese life [5].

“All the children speak Mandarin (unlike their Mum) and our ultimate comfort food is still Chinese dumplings.” [6]

Emma Walmsley, in a GSK career essay

Back in London, she tried to keep up with school life. “They are proud of their mum and though she is on a plane a lot, she makes as many school plays, matches and parent evenings as she can,” she said. She also admitted, “There is never enough sleep” [4].

Work helped too. On the day GSK named her, she said she had been “supported through four maternity leaves,” and that it made a big difference [4].

A Navy family, and a father who ran defence buying

Emma Natasha Walmsley was born in June 1969 in Barrow-in-Furness. She is the daughter of Vice Admiral Sir Robert Walmsley and Christina Walmsley, born Melvill [3].

Emma is the eldest of three. Her father’s Navy postings meant a lot of packing, and the family moved four times in six years when she was small [5]. She grew up mostly in Kent [9].

Her father had a big career. Born in Aberdeen in 1941, he served in submarines and became an expert in nuclear propulsion. He rose to Controller of the Navy, was knighted in 1995, and then ran UK defence procurement from 1996 to 2003, longer than anyone before him [10].

He also had a sporting claim to fame. As a Cambridge student he coxed the winning boat in the 1962 Boat Race [10]. His daughter went to Oxford instead, reading classics and modern languages at Christ Church [3].

Her siblings are Victoria, a therapist, and James, a barrister [11]. Her parents married in 1967 and divorced in 2009 after 42 years. Later in 2009 her father married his second wife, Alexandra [10] [11].

Her father’s death and the inquest, in brief

This chapter was painful and public, so here are only the facts. Sir Robert died on August 4, 2022, aged 81, after a fall down a staircase at a holiday house on Cape Cod, Massachusetts [10].

The Telegraph reported in April 2024 that his children had never warmed to their stepmother. At a London inquest in March 2024, a lawyer for James questioned her account. US authorities had already ruled out foul play [11].

The coroner ruled the death accidental. His will left £100,000 to each of his three children, £5,000 to each grandchild and the rest to his widow. The will was not contested [11].

After the hearing, Emma and her siblings put out one joint statement. They said the loss of their father “a long way from home, was devastating,” and that they “will continue to honour our father’s memory” [11].

We report what was said in court and in print. We don’t take sides, and we found nothing more from Emma on it since.

What her home life says about how she leads

She has always kept a low profile. The Guardian noted in 2016 that she enjoys yoga and dislikes “the pomposity of big business language and excessive PowerPoints” [9].

Her own advice links work and home. In the GSK essay she told staff to think hard about career moves, and to do “plenty of talking about what matters for you at home too” [6].

Put that next to the China move, the 2010 decision and the 2025 anniversary post, and a pattern shows. Each big step was a family call first. HP will be the next one [1] [8].
